Can I Run Through Pain?
First, if you’re experiencing any of the RED FLAGS below (these are only a few examples), I’d recommend seeking medical advice as these require further investigation.
RED FLAGS
Loss of sensation-numbness/tingling
Discoloration-pale
Swelling
Unable to put weight through your leg
Assuming we have ruled out the red flags above, now let’s talk about other types of situations. Personally, I feel “something” during majority of my runs whether it’s soreness in my calves, a mild knee pain, or some ankle pinching. Each time I feel “something” I quickly run through a grocery list in my head to help me make a real-time decision as to whether or not I should continue running.
PAIN What type and how much pain am I experiencing?
Is it something that feels achy/sore such as, from doing a hard workout and your legs are “shot”? Or is it something that feels more like a sharp/stabbing sensation? How intense is the pain? Refer to the chart to get an idea of pain levels and what to do at each stage.
If I’m out on a run and I ask myself the pain and time questions, and I find that I’m experiencing sharp/shooting pain that isn’t improving, I’m calling it a day and walking it in.
Now, I’m back home and the next things I pay attention to are:
LIFE Am I able to get through my activities of daily living? If you’re finding that your pain is affecting how you get through your day to day tasks, for example, you're limping, alternating stairs, or unable to play with your family.
MEDS Are you resorting to medications to get through your day or to help get you through your next run?
If you find that your pain is affecting your daily life and you’re resorting to medications to get by, it’s likely that something is brewing and it’s time to seek help from your medical provider.
When in doubt, I’d recommend airing on the side of caution and listening to your gut! The quicker we identify if there’s an underlying injury brewing the quicker we can get on top of it and have you feeling back to 100%
